Ever since wedding gowns have taken on the colors of Pearl, Diamond White, Off White, Champaign, Vintage White, Silk White and Cream which are all a hue of Ivory, brides have been wondering what color shirt should their groom wear????
They come in and ask me for a swatch of their dress so they can match the shirt color. My best advise is that the tux shirt should be white! Why? The shirts are usually rented. This means they are worn and wash over and over and tend to get dingy over time and Ivory shirts tend to yellow. White shirts can be bleached which will make them brighter. Since the groom will be in a black tux ( in most cases) the shirt won’t be in contact with the wedding gown for any formal pictures. Since most pictures are taken in light and most times with a flash, the light color of both the gown and the shirt will reflect the light and appear white. No one will notice on the day of the wedding that the gown and the shirt are different but in years to come you don’t want an ivory shirt to appear yellow or dingy in the pictures. Of course if you only have black and white photo’s this probably won’t apply.
At my children’s weddings all the gowns were some hue of ivory and all the tux shirts were white. The pictures, both colored and black/white are wonderful. The gowns and the shirts look the same hue and one of the albums is over 22 years. Since I’m a 24/7 wedding planner and retailer I look at them often and I want all brides to have beautiful pictures and less to worry about when planning their wedding. So take the guess work out of the shirt color and order a white tux shirt.
